Pastures first, bricks second
The City says the neighborhood's history began as pastures for German dairy farmers in the mid-nineteenth century. Its historic district page adds that the earliest buildings date to about 1850, while the vast majority were constructed from the mid-1890s to the 1920s. That means a block here usually reads as one era of brick and stone, which is the shape the City's preservation staff describe.
